Album review: Lover

Considered by many as the “barbie girl” of the music industry, Taylor Swift is the sum of all characteristics established as desirable by magazines. However, behind this standardized perfection mask, there is much more than a posh girl.

Through her last album entitled “Lover”, Swift has one more time shown her sensitivity and a very poetical way of perceiving the world. Shifting between slow and sentimental to extremely lively songs, the young composer gives life to a more mature version of herself and guides us to dive into her reflections about life experiences.

The album brings together eighteen songs, not all of them are so appealing as the ones that will be analyzed in the following paragraphs, but each has its own value.

When talking about this album, it is impossible to deny that “Soon You’ll Get Better” is one of the most out of the curve songs ever written by Taylor Swift. The lyrics are about her mother’s fight against cancer and how the singer feels powerless in front of this situation. It is truly a very commoving narrative, which transmits such genuine feelings that the artist hadn't even performed it on stage until recently, during the broadcast “Together at home”.

Another one we can’t help mentioning is the masterpiece known as “Lover”. Responsible for nominating the album, this song put into words the love between the pop star singer and her companion Joe Alwyn. When compared to other previous love songs, this one stands out due to the emotional maturity. Also, the melody is sweet, calm, and catchy. It is hard to not start singing along when listening to it.

Lastly, but not less important, we have “You need to calm down”. This song, along with “Only the Young” (featured in “Miss Americana”) is a watershed in the life of the young singer. From the beginning of her career, Taylor Swift maintained a mask of neutrality in order to avoid disfavor. Nevertheless, time has passed and Swift has finally decided to pronounce her position. In this way, “You Need to Calm Down” is an announcement of her repudiation of homophobia and support to the LGBTQ+ community.

Briefly, this album, despite maintaining Swift’s essence with all the glitters and vibrant colors, is unprecedented by the depth of ideas presented and the introduction to a new era in Taylor's career. Being honest, listening to Taylor Swift’s seventh album was an astonishing experience for me.

If you have already listened to this album (or are intended to) I recommend you to watch "Miss Americana", this probably will help you better understand what Taylor has been through and what message she wants to transmit in her songs.
